When a seller lists a picture of the dash, and there is a brightly colored microfiber cloth neatly inserted wedged between the top of the console and the bottom of the dash, one must assume:
A) The seller is very concerned with fingerprints, and needs the towel handy at all times
B) There is frequent condensation from the upper A/C vent, which needs to be absorbed
C) There is a water leak in the front of the car, which funnels down the console, and needs to be absorbed
D) The console squeaks, so padding is needed so that the driver can distinguish between rubbing plastic, and an imminent IMS failure. Also, console is squeaking due to accident damage.
E) The seller was tryin g to Armor All every square inch of interior, and the towel got stuck.
I just can’t figure out why that is there. This is a similar dash, sans yellow accent.

That is just, like, the ugliest center stack I’ve ever seen.

That’s actually the $3500 Speed Yellow™ Sport-Tex™ accenting.

I would assume A, but why not just a sk?

I’d assume squeaking, but in an old Boxster, it could be a number of different issues.

Was going to say “D”, as my car has a similar issue that I use a folded-up piece of paper to resolve. But after scrolling down to see that gap, I’m thinking it’s for towel storage.

well based on my old Allroad and with Porsche being related to Audi, its probably engine oil

I’m leaning towards water. There is also a very slight discoloration on the carpet behind the stack, and all behind the gas pedal on the other side. It could be dirt, but i t’s also rust-colored.
No word from seller yet.

It’s a convertible. When you drive with the top down things get dusty, including the inside of the glass and a gauges. I keep a roll of workshop towels in my Boxster for the same reason. They're just going the microfiber route as they're classier than I.

I have a Boxster as well. There are 99 other places to keep a towel - the cubbyhole right below it, t he glovebox, t he door storage panels, t he sliding storage shelf right behind you, etc.
I can’t think of a reason to put it there, e spe cially if you’re selling a very monochrome car (this is a pretty rare black top/interior SE) and you’re taking pictures for the listing.
Likely innocuous , but incredibly suspicious to me! I have an 03, and it would take some effort to get a folded rag in there to look that neat.

D was my first thought but I hadn’t considered any of the water issues you mentioned.

That’s a mighty big gap to end up needing a shim to stop squeaking. A microfiber like that isn’t great for absorbing something that drips constantly so I doubt its there to deal with a leak. I’m going to guess that the owner just keeps it there for easy cleaning of the dash and that’s a convenient spot to keep it. I keep a similar microfiber cloth (blue instead of yellow) in my glove box for dealing with the piano black plastic that’s all over the interior of the Corolla.

I wear glasses and keep a microfiber towel in all my cars. I did have a few black ones but found they got lost in my black interior cars. Recently I bought a pack of green ones and put one in each car.
